26th May 2007 - Sura Vara Vanditha and Tarang

Venue: Cleckheaton Town Hall

Tarang is an ensemble of young musicians over the age of 18 trained in both the Hindustani (North Indian) and Carnatic (South Indian) traditions of Indian music.

The six strong group consisted of Debipriya Das and Surmeet Singh on the two Sitars, Tom Pope on the Mandolin, Olivia Moore on the Violin and Upneet Singh and Puish Kumar Engineer on the two Tablas.

Tarang gave a tight, well co-ordinated performance, with each musician given a chance to show their skill. Just one of the mainly high lights of Tarang was the jugalbandhi (duet) between the tabla players in which they dazzled us with their speed and energy.

The music Tarang perform is specially written for them by highly regarded musicians that include Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty and Prof.T.V.Gopalakrishnan.

The second half brought us some traditional narratives from India. Sharanya Rajagopalan moved gracefully from character to character sustaining each story with ease and technical skill.
