10th June 2007 - Sangeet Yatra - Samay
Venue: Yorkshire Sculpture Park
Manasamitra and the Yorkshire Sculpture Park jointly presented Samay in the first of the Sangeet Yatra series.
Samay is a unique collective of musicians exploring new ways of understanding and making music. Taking the traditional music of India as a base for construction original arrangements and improvisations as well as using their previous experience in jazz and various world folk styles the musicians created a distinctive sound so far unknown to the western or eastern world.
The band consists of Jesse Bannister on Saxophone, Giuliano Modarelli on Guitar, Bhupinder Singh Chaggar on Tabla, Soumik Datta on Sarod and Javier Geras on Bass. With such a cultural mix within the band, it was great that the pieces they played showed elements of each musician’s background and personality.
Their blend of funky melodies and sexy bass lines were complemented by rock solid beats and brilliant improvisations, leaving everyone in the room dancing in their seats! The perfect band for the perfect summer afternoon in the YSP.
